Bio

Aloy is exploring how municipalities can thrive economically while reducing emissions as an MSc student in Resources, Environment, and Sustainability at UBC. His research with the Accelerating Community Energy Transformation (ACET) project tackles questions for British Columbia municipalities: Can municipalities boost workforce participation while cutting transportation emissions? Can we increase education and income levels without increasing utility emissions?

Aloy brings an interdisciplinary perspective to sustainability challenges. After earning his Bachelor’s in Electrical Engineering from UBC as an International Major Entrance Scholar, he has applied his technical expertise across diverse projects—from training deep learning models to map solar infrastructure via satellite imagery to engineering laboratory equipment for decarbonization research at the Quantum Matter Institute. His Brazilian roots and international experience enhance his approach to global climate challenges.

His work at the AI-sustainability nexus has garnered recognition. KPMG selected him as an emerging leader to address 200+ attendees at Pacific Northwest Climate Week. He won Stanford University’s Cleantech Challenge for designing a business solution helping Ford Motors repurpose EV batteries. UBC awarded him the International Community Achievement Award for leadership in intellectual pursuits and intercultural understanding. And he was invited to co-design a transdisciplinary PhD program on climate action with Professor Naoko Ellis, one of his current supervisors alongside Dr. Bhushan Gopaluni.

When not advancing sustainability research, Aloy can be found hiking BC’s trails or jamming on the drums.
