On-call Fisheries Technician | Okanagan Nation Alliance


The Okanagan Nation Alliance (ONA) is the Tribal Council for the Syilx Okanagan Nation. The ONA’s mandate is to advance, assert, support and preserve the Syilx Okanagan Nation title and rights. Further, the ONA is charged with providing members with a forum to discuss and form positions of common concern.

The Okanagan Nation Alliance (ONA) seasonally employs fisheries technicians throughout the year with peak activities between April-June and September-November. The ONA is currently seeking to employ seasonal on-call Fisheries Technicians. The work term will be throughout April to end of May with up to 30+ hours per week and will vary with the sampling schedule. As a Fisheries Technician, you will undertake duties associated with the Okanagan Nation Alliance’s initiatives within the Okanagan basin; with project and work sites primarily in the Penticton, Oliver and Osoyoos areas. The successful applicants should be comfortable working in and around water. As most projects are time-sensitive, it is critical that the applicant is committed and dedicated to on-the-job responsibilities.

Duties may include:

  • Fish bio-sampling
  • Purse Seining/boat work
  • PIT tagging and juvenile fish handling
  • Lake and river habitat studies
  • Other duties as required of projects

Qualifications:

  • Work experience in Fisheries related field work is preferred
  • Knowledge of fish identification an asset.
  • Experience handling small boats an asset.
  • First Aid Level 1 an asset.
  • BC Class 5 Driver’s License (or equivalent) an asset.
  • Must be comfortable and feel safe working in and around water and working in all weather conditions.
  • Good swimming ability required.
  • Willingness to work evenings and weekends as required
  • Willingness to travel to work sites
  • Reliable and good work ethics.
  • Preference will be given to qualified applicants of Okanagan Aboriginal ancestry

Term: Up to 30-40 hrs/week on-call with flexible work hours (e.g. some evenings and weekends)
