Hongsik joined the Institute for Resources, Environment and Sustainability, and Institute for Oceans and Fisheries in 2018. He is researching in the Fisheries Economics Research Unit, supervised by Dr. U. Rashid Sumaila. Identifying the optimum option for both humans obtaining a maximum benefit from using nature and nature keeping away from overexploitation, he has studied on analyzing the economic value for using natural resources, especially in respect of fisheries, and its ripple effects on society. Currently, his thesis is part of the Oxynet project -A network to examine ocean deoxygenation trends and impacts- and involves analyzing the economic impact of deoxygenation in the ocean, with a particular focus on fisheries to develop strategies which enhance the operations and environmental sustainability of marine industries.
