DPhil Studentship available for 2020: Nature and Well-being among care leavers – people, policy and practice

Applications are invited for a fully funded DPhil Studentship in the Environmental Change Institute in the University of Oxford, to be supervised by Dr Mark Hirons. The project is funded by the Welland Trust. The student will work with partners of the Welland Trust during the project, including Under the Sky, an organisation that provides opportunities in the outdoors to care experienced adults with the aim of transforming their lives. This studentship will cover three years of University fees along with a maintenance allowance and research costs.

The doctoral project represents an excellent opportunity for a suitably qualified student to make important contributions to the knowledge base concerning the benefits of nature to people. The research will be interdisciplinary, and students could come from any disciplinary background, but the research will require students to have particular strengths in qualitative research methods. It is essential that the candidate can build strong relationships with a wide range of individuals, including those who come from challenging backgrounds. We particularly welcome applicants who have experienced the care system.

Suitably qualified candidates wishing to apply for this studentship should submit a covering letter explaining their interest and suitability for the role, a sample of their written work (such as a Masters dissertation) and CV and the names of 2 referees who will be contacted if applicants are short-listed to be sent to: Ruth Saxton, Research Degrees Coordinator, School of Geography and the Environment, OUCE, South Parks Road, Oxford OX1 3QY or via email to  by 2nd December 2019.

Candidates will be notified of the outcome of their application by the 16th December and we will be holding interviews for short-listed candidates in January 2020 (date to be confirmed).

Please note: the successful applicant will also be asked to submit a full Oxford University Application to reach us by the deadline of 3rd March 2020.
