Dr. Rashid Sumaila (IRES Faculty Associate) endowed prize upon being named the 2017 Volvo Environment Prize laureate

A $4,000 prize has been endowed by Dr. Rashid Sumaila, an IRES Faculty Associate, upon being named the 2017 Volvo Environment Prize laureate. This prize is offered to the Master’s or PhD student whose peer-reviewed publications to date are expected to have the most significant impact on the field of environmental sustainability. Preference is given to students supervised by faculty members who are affiliated with the Institute for the Oceans and Fisheries, the Institute for Resources, Environment and Sustainability or the School of Public Policy and Global Affairs. The prize is made on the recommendation of the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies.

Points to note:

o As long as the publication date is within their period of study at UBC it can be considered. For example, some students may be publishing research they started during their previous degree;

o Additionally, timing for publications would include anything published or in press during their graduate studies;

o Preference defined: preference would be given first to students in these programs and if there are no suitable nominees then it would be opened up to others making an impact in the field of environmental sustainability.
